URCS Theory research group featured in Communications of the ACM

Piotr Faliszewski (Ph.D. '08), URCS Professor Lane A. Hemaspaandra, and RIT Professor Edith Hemaspaandra are featured as the cover story for this month's Communications of the Association for Computing Machinery for their article, "Using Complexity to Protect Elections." Their work argues that though reasonable election systems cannot make manipulation impossible, that using complexity, they can make manipulation computationally infeasible.

Kollar receives best student paper award at ICMI-2010

Tom Kollar (BS - '04) earned the distinction of Best Student Paper at the International Conference on Multimodal Interfaces in Beijing, China this month. Kollar's paper is entitled "Grounding Spatial Language for Video Search". Tom is currently a Ph.D. candidate at MIT.

Congratulations to CSC undergraduates (Robin Miller, Adina Rubinoff, Josh Pawlicki, David Klein and Rintaro Kuwoira) who put together the winning entry in the First Annual HSEAS Pumpkin Design contest. The CSC pumpkin won both categories - "Most Creative" and "Best Representation of the Discipline" for their pumpkin. The glittery pumpkin sat on top of a Scribbler robot, and sang the Monster Mash while dancing to the music. Entries were submitted by Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Optics as well as CSC. Great job team!!

Marty Guenther wins HSEAS Outstanding Staff Award

Undergraduate Coordinator Marty Guenther won the Hajim School 2010 Outstanding Staff Award for the dedicated advising and organizational work that has made her the heart of our undergraduate program. She received the award at the Hajim School of Engineering Annual Fall Reception, Thursday 9/2 at Oak Hill Country Club.

Dr James Vallino has been selected as co-winner this year of the Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching at Rochester Institute of Technology. The award will be presented at RIT's annual Celebration of Teaching and Scholarship, an evening reception and dinner, Tuesday, May 11th. Jim has been teaching and challenging students at RIT since 1997.
